Hunter boots or Wellies as they call them in England have so much history and tradition attached to them. Skimming a wikipedia article about them, I learned that the company has been operating for over 150 years. Originally they were favored by literal hunters because the boot didn’t pull off in the mud, but they got a huge boost during WWII where the government made a huge order for men in the trenches. I read they are so popular with middle to upper class rural people that those people are known as the “green welly brigade”.

Well, they are now a fashion item. Who among us who reads an Us Weekly from time to time is not familiar with the site of Kate Moss or Sienna Miller trekking through the mud in Glastonbury wearing these boots? Also, Jcrew has begun selling them.

Well, luckily for us they are made totally of rubber and thus, no animal products are used in the making of this boot. There are many many colors–some very cool–to buy this boot in, but I would buy green, for brand recognition.

Buy here at Zappos.

you’re kidding me. thank you for pointing this out to me. I checked out the website but couldn’t find where it said that. Will you let me know what they said? I have them and can’t see where any animal products could be used in them as they are totally rubber but I would definitely like to know if i’m wrong, and if so, I will alert everyone and take this post down. Thanks!!!

Wrong. According to PETA the original hunter boot is vegan.

They’re made of rubber and rubber only, confirmed on their website. Some animal products are used in some of the shoes, they’re not an expressly vegan friendly company but the original hunter boots ARE VEGAN. 👍🏼😊

Wow. Thank you for this! I have no idea why they wouldn’t be? I wish these companies would be more specific. I feel like sometimes they just say they aren’t vegan rather than look into what it even means to be vegan in the first place. But thank you SO much for forwarding this on to me. I mean, i have hunter boots and there is nothing on there that could remotely be considered leather, wool, silk…it’s just like a rubber shell…but If thay say so, I guess we better believe them! I will update this post. Thanks again for sharing with me.

No worries. It could be the glue or the rubber making process. Animal products are in so many things. I remember my own shock regarding most condoms, some beer/wine and camera film (drove me to digital very early).

I did discover Kamik, who make a variety of vegan wellies.

And I just got this from another company, LaCrosse. Their equipment looks aimed at a shooting market, but ironically their rubber boots are vegan, they say:

        Hi Marc,

All of our rubber boots are vegan. It’s not an odd question, I’ve actually been asked before so I knew the answer! We don’t use any animal products to make our rubber boots. Thanks!

        Have a great day,

The boots are made with non animal material, the liner are not. They are made from sheep and are sold separately.

The Rubber maybe vegan friendly, but not always the glue used in production. Rockfish wellies are vegan friendly and do not use animal by-product glue. Rockfish also are so comfy under your feet, like wearing slippers, except they don’t crack or split. love mine
