The Impossible Dream and Animal Rights

Have you ever seen the show Man of La Mancha.

It’s about Don Quixote, the guy who people thought was crazy because he one day got off the couch, left the farm, and decided to live a life devoted to the ideals of King Arthur’s Court…of chivalry…goodness, kindness, pure love, pure friendship, nobleness of the soul, that kind of thing.

Everyone literally thought he was crazy.

I guess he was.

There was lying cheating and stealing all around and he rode through the hills worshipping this randomly chosen woman, telling her she was a goddess from heaven.

In the play, she is a prostitute.

In the play, he sings this song to her “The Impossible Dream”. (listen to it here)

Tonight I was thinking about things and my dreams. The dreams I keep hidden inside basically.

It was very upsetting thinking about how impossible they were.

Then I thought hmm… the impossible dream, and I looked up the lyrics. I was stunned at how perfect the lyrics to this song are and how they express the deepest thought about life.

If you have an impossible dream, yes it’s impossible. But just following that dream is so beautiful and means you can die knowing you tried to live out your destiny, and just like it says, the world will be better for it, seeing that you tried and lived by your ideals. “still strove with his last ounce of courage…to reach the unreachable star”.

The lyrics are perfect and express it perfectly.

I thought this poem is very applicable to animal rights fighters and vegans, and reminds me of the many animal rights hero people I have interviewed and all the people who see the ghosts. (I am inspired to make a youtube montage lyrics video of all the animal rights people with this song over it ha)

“To dream … the impossible dream …
To fight … the unbeatable foe …
To bear … with unbearable sorrow …
To run … where the brave dare not go …
To right … the unrightable wrong …
To love … pure and chaste from afar …
To try … when your arms are too weary …
To reach … the unreachable star …

This is my quest, to follow that star …
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far …
To fight for the right, without question or pause …
To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause …

And I know if I’ll only be true, to this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie will lie peaceful and calm,
when I’m laid to my rest …
And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach … the unreachable star …”

Isn’t that beautiful?

This is the quest, to follow that star…no matter how hopeless. No matter how far.

To fight for the right…

Ok I am about to repeat all the lyrics. Better stop here. : )

Question: Do you feel you have an impossible dream as well?
